With her fourth album, “No Shame,” floating around the world since June, Lily Allen gave an adorably sassy performance at the Fonda on Monday night. Clad in green and pink bubblegum colors, Allen treated the packed venue to 21 songs, reaching all the way back for favorites from her 2006 debut, “Alright, Still.” Mark Ronson, who produced some of that record and worked on her recent one, watched from the sound booth, accompanied by Miley Cyrus. Remember, 2006 was the year Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse made a huge impact on music, and Ronson was behind them both. Gold old Ronson.
The new songs reflect a tough time Allen experienced after the release of 2014’s “Sheezuz,” where she felt disconnected from her music and then her marriage fell apart. After the divorce, Allen began writing again, and set her darkest feelings to fun, bubbly electro-pop splashed with reggae and dancehall.
Allen had the audience giggling between songs. “I worked with Mark on this one but unfortunately there are no strings tonight because I can’t afford them,” she quipped while introducing “Who’d Have Known.” Before “Not Fair,” Allen said, “This is our last song,” and then after a cheer from the crowd she laughed and said “Why do people do this charade?” She then added “Anyway, this one is for the ladies, its ‘Not Fair.'” She then played three more songs, finishing the night with a nice “Fuck you.”
Opener S-X delivered his first performance in Los Angeles, opening the show solo using a backing track to accompany his vocals.
